FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — WASHINGTON, DC — Representative Nydia Velázquez (D-N.Y.) introduced a Resolution to the House of Representatives designating the week of April 9 through 15, 2023, as National Young Audiences Arts for Learning Week (YA Week). The designation of YA Week honors the contributions Young Audiences Arts for Learning (YA) has made to students and schools nationwide through arts in education programs.

The 2023 YA Week Resolution, co-sponsored by Rep. Hank Johnson (D-G.A.)Rep. Alma Adams (D-N.C.), and Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-O.R.), highlights the work of the YA network and encourages the public to recognize the important contributions the arts make to society. It emphasizes that arts education, comprising a rich array of disciplines, "is an essential element of a complete and well-rounded education for all students," providing "a well-researched and proven methodology to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all students, especially for English language learners and students with special needs."

“During YA Week, we’re reminded of the arts’ incredible ability to educate, inspire, and empower," said David A. Dik, National Executive Director of Young Audiences Arts for Learning. “The occasion serves to highlight the core Young Audiences Arts for Learning value that all young people deserve equitable access to a well-rounded, arts-rich education, which nurtures skills for success in school and life."

An annual advocacy and awareness initiative first championed by conductor Leonard Bernstein in 1971, YA Week has grown into a national celebration of arts in education observed each spring.
