Now in its 10th year, the ArtWorks Internship in the Arts program at Arts for Learning/Miami provides paid summer learning opportunities to students in grades 9 through 12. ArtWorks participants spend six weeks making and producing works of art in the creative cohort of their choice while also building valuable skills for college and career readiness.

To kick off its Summer 2022 internship cycle, ArtWorks welcomed 53 highschoolers to work alongside professional teaching artists in five artistic areas: animation, creative writing, music production, visual arts, and dance & theatre. This current summer is especially exciting for ArtWorks, as the program has a new home at Miami-Dade College’s Koubek Center, in Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.

As the South Florida affiliate of Young Audiences Arts for Learning, Arts for Learning/Miami is dedicated to advancing teaching and learning through the arts for students across the region. While ArtsWorks internships historically have been held in only two Miami neighborhoods, moving the program to Little Havana helped to expand its reach into 25 high schools and grow Arts for Learning/Miami’s capacity for reaching teens throughout South Florida.

Arts for Learning/Miami believes that its ArtWorks program is more important now than ever. “Young people are looking for ways to connect in general, coming off of the pandemic and virtual classes,” said Program Director Ivy Bennett, who has overseen ArtWorks since its 2012 inception. “Having the benefit of meeting other high school students from across South Florida is an added bonus. Housing the program at The Koubek Center is giving [participants] the chance to work with teens from a different part of the region, creating even more opportunities for collaboration.”

The Summer 2022 internship cycle will culminate in a performance and exhibition at the Koubek Center, which will be open to the public on Thursday, July 28. To find out more, please contact Arts for Learning/Miami’s Carolina Candelaria at carolina@a4lmiami.org.

Fun YA fact: The model for the ArtWorks program is based on the ArtWorks program originated by the Center for Arts-Inspired Learning, YA's Northeast Ohio affiliate.
