We’re thrilled that Porter Carroll, Jr. will be performing at Young Audiences Arts for Learning’s 70th Anniversary Gala on November 9 at the Mandarin Oriental New York. The event will bring together dedicated supporters of arts in education for a memorable evening in celebration and support of Young Audiences’ seven-decade history and ongoing missing to inspire young people and expand their learning through the arts.
Porter Carroll Jr. is a dynamic singer, songwriter, and percussionist. As a high school junior, he created Newban, a nine-piece band that would later change its name to Atlantic Starr. The A&M Records find went on to top the Billboard charts over 25 times, reached the top ten eleven times, and climbed to number one with three Pop smashes. The Greenburgh, NY native enjoyed 15 years of recording and touring success with his childhood friends and family.
He left the group in the mid-eighties to pursue and land a staff songwriting position with CBS/Sony Music Publishing. There, he would write for Luther Vandross, The Temptations, Denise Williams, Bob James, Will Downing, Jane Fonda, The Guiding Light, As the World Turns, and more. In the mid-nineties, he made a hard pivot and left the music business entirely.
He entered a career in advertising with the Gannett Corporation, where he would remain until the early 2000’s. Shortly after departing, Daryl Hall and John Oates invited him into their universe. He is currently a regular on Daryl’s, Live from Daryl’s House TV series. He travels the world on Daryl’s solo tours and joins the two Hall of Famers on stages throughout the globe. It’s been “an unbelievable ride” through the arts for Porter Carroll Jr.
While on breaks from these assignments, he performs in two breakout projects of his own: The Evolution of Cabaret, a “bold and daring nightclub act for the modern world,” and Symphony Rhythm & Blues, “the ultimate crossover.”
