Storytelling in San Diego

Through a grant from The Western States Arts Federation, Young Audiences of San Diego brought nationally renowned storyteller David Novak to San Diego for six school assemblies in celebration of Read Across America.  Read Across America celebrates the birthday of Dr. Seuss and encourages every child to celebrate reading. Over 1,000 students at three elementary schools were treated to David's storytelling mastery.  The grant also supported a free public performance that took place at the La Mesa branch of the San Diego County Library in front of the largest crowd that the library has had for a Saturday storytelling event.

David is often featured at the National Storytelling Festival and was recently the Master Storyteller for The Disney Institute at Walt Disney World in Florida. During David's visit, Young Audiences also collaborated with The Storytellers of San Diego. With the assistance of YA storyteller Marilyn McPhie, a 3-hour master class was held with area storytellers at The Salvation Army Kroc Center.

Congresswoman Susan Davis was a special guest at the Fourth Annual Hoover High School Brazilian Carnaval on March 16th.  Congresswoman Davis' remarks honored YA of San Diego during National Young Audiences Week and highlighted the important work the organization does in the community.  Brazilian music and dance ensemble Nos de Chita was joined onstage by Hoover High music and dance students followed by The San Diego Guild of Puppetry who helped families create colorful Carnaval masks.
