Young Audiences Arts for Learning Virgina loves their students of military families. Their goal is to strengthen the connection their students of military families feel to their schools, their families and each other, while also providing a support system and opportunities for our students to experience success. YAV’s professional Visual Artists, Christopher Revels and Richard Nickel, will work with the students to design, develop and create a traveling mural that will move throughout Norfolk Public Schools and local Norfolk organizations bringing the experience of military children to live. The students will learn art fundamentals from experts as they work together as a team through the creative process.
Learning Goals of the Project: The Military Child Initiative seeks to provide students with creative, constructive ways to process their experiences and express their emotions. The Military Child Initiative considered key external and internal assets when developing the curriculum.
- Students will work through the creative process to create a large-scale, traveling art project.
- Guiding students through experiencing positive school support, friendship, parent involvement in schooling, service to others, safety, positive peer influence and high expectations.
- Students will engage with creative activities, bonding to their school and others, and will experience long-lasting learning moments to practice integrity, responsibility, restraint, interpersonal competence, cultural competence and peaceful conflict resolution all while building self-esteem and a positive view of their personal futures.
