With generous support from The Buffalo Rotary Foundation, Young Audiences of Western New York was able to purchase 20 iPad minis and 20 iPad covers this past Fall. We are excited about this new endeavor as this technology will be used in our important programming that directly serves youth that are most at risk for educational and societal failure in our communities.
iPad minis are a central tool for engaging and preparing young people for the 21st century workplace. Naomi Pabon-Figueroa, Director of Programs at Young Audiences of Western New York, states:
"Our mission is to inspire young people to participate and understand the arts in the context of the world in general, and their lives specifically. As we endeavored to fulfill this work, we required more innovative and dynamic tools to engage them in the classroom. That is why we are thrilled to have received the support of The Buffalo Rotary Foundation to purchase 20 iPads and cases. Now, with 30 iPads, rather than 10, we are able to serve 400 students, rather than 150."
The addition of more iPad minis allows for more youth, at more locations, to work with artists utilizing digital media.
Young Audiences of Western New York's programming encourages work that builds on Rotarian values with our youth such as high ethical standards, a concern for others, tolerance, sense of self, and seeking their full potential. Speaking on behalf of the Foundation on its support, Katharine Smith, Secretary of the Board of Directors, has stated:
"The Rotary Club of Buffalo is where neighbors, friends, and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders, and take action to create lasting change in Western New York...One of Rotary's most compelling worldwide causes is supporting education. Locally, the Rotary Club of Buffalo recognizes the impact of after school programs, such as Young Audiences of WNY, for at-risk children. Providing access to the arts and a safe place to create helps children and young people to believe in their own future."
This technology will further enhance the student participants' ability to inquire and question about the world around them; to creatively articulate a perspective around those questions; and to share their work as a means to encourage resilience and goodwill. Together, we believe that all young people can create and learn when provided appropriate environments and opportunities for success.
