Born Shamir Walters has spent the better part of his career as a Hip-Hop performing artist, DJ, producer, sound designer, audio engineer, and visual / graphic artist. By day he teaches or volunteers his visual arts, music, and songwriting skills to children and young adults in both community-based programmatic and classroom settings.
Born obtained his YA National Teaching Artist Credential in 2024, adding another notch to his belt of three decades' worth of teaching experience. Through his professional learning work with Art Ed Collaborative and YA's RAISE program, Born has enhanced his pedagogy to include certificates in Healing Centered Education, Trauma-Informed Care, Cultural Responsive Education, and SEL Training. He solidified his African-centered education with decades of work done with Dr. I Asia and Children’s Window to Africa, with a focus on building up competencies in STEM / STEAM and layering in language arts via songwriting to promote literacy.
An emphasis on cultural awareness and self-awareness through the lens of Hip-Hop Culture by its principles and cultural perspectives is his current mode of operation.
